Half of us believe a walnut desk is the most mature purchase we’ve ever collectively agreed on. The other half think it’s just a very expensive place to keep a laptop stand, three cables and a mug we’ve stopped washing that’s been residing there since Tuesday. Both camps are right. Welcome to dealing with walnut.
It arrived and immediately stopped every other item of furniture in the room existing, let alone trying to match it. It’s the walnut desk effect. It demands no attention, just radiates it and suddenly your desk lamp, your chair, the sad little pot plant on the corner is shouting LOOK AT ME TOO.
None of us intended to get soppy over a desk.
And yet.
Sit down.
Knock over one coffee, miss your coaster once and there’s that weird half-second silence while everybody in the room stare at you and oh god pretend they didn’t notice. We all know it’s wood. We all know wood gets marks. Doesn’t mean we don’t have a slight panic every time.
The desks drawer situation also needs brief acknowledgement here because OH MY GOD one of us bought upgraded rollers WITHIN A MONTH of owning this desk because they weren’t smooth enough, AND NOW WE CONSTANTLY BRING IT UP UNPREPONDED AT LEAST TWICE A YEAR AS IF IT’S A CHARACTER FLAW.

Living with it on a day to day basis isn’t really about the desk. It’s about what you can get away with leaving on it. Good desks let you look messy. Cheap desks with crap just left on them look bad. Throw that same crap on a good walnut desk and suddenly you look like an actual person that works from home and has their shit together. You don’t!
But guests can’t tell and it feels like you do, and tbh that’s about 90% of why we were shopping.
We legit debated on whether or not it needed to take up so much space.
It doesn’t.
Nobody needs that much desk space. You could set a small dinner party’s worth of food on there and wouldn’t be judged. But the smaller version we looked at kept feeling like we were back at school, elbows not reaching the edges, laptop getting knocked – went back the same day.
None of the desk websites told you about how it changes the room. That corner you used to chuck bags against now someone actually sits in it on purpose. Best desk ever for accomplishing its task or we’re just really tired of stubbing our toes on bags, you can’t really tell which.
If we could go back we’d have bought this when we first started looking. Before the daiquiri destroyer we were given from hell, before the “oooh we’ll get a real one one day” desk that we kept through four house moves out of pure stubbornness despite falling apart. This is what we should have went for from the start. Took us long enough to realise that.
