We won the argument, technically, in February when someone pulled up a photo of their hallway from the year they bought their white shoe cabinet three years ago and there it was. Still white. No scratches. No grey smear from the tide line of boots along the bottom. It buried that metric argument that white anything within ten foot of a front door is something you regret in October time. Some of us admitted defeat there and then.

One lady refuses to believe it still and whips out her neighbour’s white radiator cover everytime as evidence that ANY white object stationed near foot traffic is spiritually hexed.

Which we all agreed isn’t even remotely the same thing but she’s said it every time since.

What we don’t argue about is why we all keep buying them.

There’s something about a hallway WITH proper shoe storage, as opposed to shoved by the door/bought for the purpose of holding coats/from the skip behind Waitrose, that says YOU. HAVE YOUR LIFE TOGETHER. Even if the people it belongs to are hurrying half a dozen trainers into it five seconds before the doorbell rings. It’s ourinasampleofMagic.

The day to day truths are less poetic. At least one person in every house uses the top like a perch for keys/mail/one half of a glove/the plant they bought to make it look like they DID have time to arrange things in their hallway. Another person yanks open the flap doors as if on some level they’re offended by them, and shuts them with a loudly thwapping foot instead of a hand, cultivating after two years precisely the kind of ugly hairline scratches along a once-white edge that makes everyone ask who did that again and then talk about radiator covers.

In terms of flap doors versus drawers for anything intended to house more than six pairs of shoes (why do people buy shoe storage with six pairs of sliders? SIX pairs of shoes? Who has MORE THAN SIX PAIRS OF TRAINERS?) we’re pretty united. Drawers are a swearword because they mean you have to kneel on the heavily trafficked hallway floor at 7am when you’re just about vertical to begin with in search of the elusive trainer that ELEPHANT. ONE OF US HAS AN ELEPHANT PRINTED ON THEIR TRAINERS.

KNEELING.

AGAIN.

Naturally the person who disagrees with us drawers-will-ruin-your-life is the same person who has mould staining on their shoe cabinet from that one shoe moulded so deeply into the back corner we couldn’t get it out.

The real test of any shoe cabinet isn’t how glorious it looks on month but whether or not it can survive; a wet dog shaking itself nearby, three small children reaching to tap the flaps at exactly hip height and someone’s mother visiting who will immediately run her hand along the top to see if you’ve dusted. She will. Every time.

So yes, we still stand by white. Every day. Despite the stupid Scuffs. Because getting one that fits your units perfectly and holds ALL of your shoes doesn’t ask much of you and when you treat it right it rewards you every day, whereas a bad one becomes that thing you avoid eye contact with every November as the grey silently mocks you up from the skirting like it heard you.

We don’t agree with her on the radiator cover. No we didn’t. Shut up.
