This website had a good year or two where its stance on white storage cabinets was essentially “no.” Cold, sterile showroom piece, looks like something your parents kept the coat you buried in WaitForIt hung over in next to a jetted tube full of radioactive chemicals. Anyway that was the sentiment. Slowly though – nobody actually came out and changed their minds officially – attitudes evolved and now half our storage cabinet suggestions we send customers are white ones, and no one wants to own up to how that change happened.
It likely started when someone put one in a hallway that shouldn’t have been able to reflect that much light and were waiting for it to look clinical. It didn’t. It looked peaceful. Everything thrown on top of it, old mail that needs opened, the single sock from the pair you lost despite this clearly being your laundry basket, looked less busy on white than ever got on that brown speckled wood finish it replaced.
That’s the selling point of it.
It doesn’t disguise the mess you’re making.
It makes it look like you can handle it.
Having one daily is less poet than that makes it sound. White cannot hide anything. A spill you didn’t notice til after the cups dried leaves a dent in the room’s personality. Someone’s got a white cabinet with a grey smear about three inches down from the handle that’s been there 14 months and yet fails every cleaning we subject it to despite our best efforts. Including one with that magic eraser. Got some of the finish off. Send help, it was an upsetting day.
For real though where we draw the line now is the endurance level the finish needs between cleanings. Some of us need it to be scrub-able. Science lab sturdy because life is going to happen next to it all the time. Others think the less shiny, slightly dusty white looks more attractive on camera and are fine it getting marked if you look at it wrong.

We don’t see enough of the other side’s living situations to understand how they got there.
These days, we’ve just come to terms with purchasing for different spaces with different lifestyles and don’t try to convince the other side anymore.
The other argument we can’t really comeback on is how quickly and easily white cabinets go from “pure” to “doesn’t anyone ever clean this?” if you’ve got children, or a dog who thinks furniture is a support beam, or hell kids.
You can’t rub the off once and call it good. It’ll need maintained weekly. Nobody informs you of that when purchasing and everyone pretends they knew that when complaining about it.
Be that as it may the transition happened. No one speaks fondly of the dark bulky wood somethingyourparentsusedtowasteyourjunkweallhad style cabinets anymore. Not seriously. If someone mentions one now it’s out of pure nostalgia and they will be quickly reprimanded.
Pretty much where we find ourselves as a team years and arguments later: White cabinets are the way to go despite the extra polishing, most spaces benefit from being lighter than you assume they will and the stain by the door is just part of owning a white storage cabinet now. No one’s proud of that last part. We’re just accepting of it.
