Look back through our archives of double bed frame reviews and you can trace our opinion shifting back through the years. Initially it was heads all the way, cushioned headboards specifically – sofas for your head to sink into at the end of the day. Then there was a period – about two years of dodgy accounting where we’ll quietly own up to – where the whole site turned against upholstery and ranted about solidity and wood and how your frame should merge into the background of your room. We’ve swung somewhere else again since then, and nobody wants to say who actually got it right because all three of us are still employed here.
One thing we haven’t wavered on is that doubles are the beds you properly live with. Singles are for hotels and holding onto bitter sentiments about kids who used to sleep in them. Kings are for people who can actually walk around their bedroom without turning the lights on.
A double bed is where you and your partner wind up one night sharing the same eighteen inches of mattress because you just kinda do, not because you have to, and the frame it’s built into has to accommodate two adults wrestling themselves into.sleep.position every night without making a noise loud enough to summon the neighbourhood.
We’ve had frames that lasted us eleven years, and frames that gave us personality flaws within eleven months; a distinct and noticeable squeak that could only be replicated at 6am sharp, and only if you tried when it was a Tuesday.
We’ve never figured out why.

One of our office favourite’s is constructed of metal and was sold to us secondhand when someone else dismantled it and forgot a screw. We’ve moved house with that frame three times over and it still carries the same little dent in one corner from the one move where we swore at the stair case for being too narrow.

The slats are the thing nobody mentions. Buy a bed frame with solid centre support and you’ll not think about it ever again until you sell the house twenty years later. Buy one that’s cheap in that department and you’ll find yourself half asleep at 2am trying to bargain with the universe that your entire bed isn’t slowly collapsing on you, til you’re spooning your body pillow diagonal to the ground.

Slowly.
It’s totally folding you into a V shape.
There’s an equal divide between those who like their headboards bolted directly to the frame, and those who position them against the wall at a distance.
The free-hangers say it’s easier that way. Direct-to-wall fans think the second you get a vigorous headboard-accentuating hoover about someone’s head will come splintering off. Nobody has any proof to back this up. Everyone mentions it every time.
Despite our ever-evolving opinions about what makes a good double bed frame, we keep coming back to one point. Your bed is something you buy for how you live your life now. Not how you did five years ago at university with a partner who you’re no longer friends with, and not how you hope to in ten years when you’ve got more space and less tolerance for objects with more than two screws. Your bed’s for right now. It’ll outlive any of our takes.
