One of us said last Tuesday that she once swore up down and sideways that white dressing tables always showed every mark you made on them and she refused to allow one in her house because of it. Then she bought one last spring and actually can’t figure out why she spent four years being so very wrong about them.

That’s her whole story. We didn’t corner her and demand the truth. She walked into the office one day and blurted it out like she’d been holding onto it her entire life.

She hadn’t. White only shows on crappy ones, the flimsy ones with painted legs that scratch if you glance at them the wrong way. The good ones wipe clean without fighting back; a coffee ring, a shove from your hair dryer cord, whatever else your Tuesday morning cares to fling at it.

She’d judged the entire genre of furniture based on one inexpensive table she purchased in 2019 and vowed never to wear white in that room again, when in reality she should have cursed cheap furniture.

Okay, once you get past that whole ordeal what we love about white dressing tables is how they effortlessly slide into the rooms they occupy.

Dark wood tables speak; they’re statement pieces that don’t care if they match your curtains.

White blends into the wall slightly and allows whatever clutter you pile on top of it speak for itself. Which is beautiful or tragic, depending on how many stubbed out candles and lonely earrings reside on yours.

One of us keeps hers bare except for a lamp and a tray, and her table looks like it belongs in a luxury hotel you’ll never be able to afford. The rest of us have thrown our hands up and treat our dressing table like a drop zone for all the random things that don’t have a place to live; hair brushes, last month’s shampoo sample, an iPhone charger that’s been “just sitting there” since the start of the year. White will amplify that for you too, yes.

But also everything else.

See, that’s sort of the agreement you make when you bring a white table into your home.

Where we can’t agree on everything is the mirror.

One half of us wants it attached, one solid seamless piece. The other half wants a separate mirror entirely because drilling into the perfect table and then realizing how much you hated that decision the day you need your dresser to be three inches to the left is pure hell. Nobody will budge on this. We’ve given up trying to come to a consensus and just buy tables based on our preferred mirror situation.

You also care about drawers more than you expect when you start looking. Not how many they have, just whether they open easily or if they fight you back every.single.time. because trust me when I say there’s nothing like waking up at seven o clock in the morning needing to put mascara on with one hand while you swear into your bedroom drawer because it’s sticking again. More than one of us has yelled at a drawer for simply not wanting to cooperate.

We’ll argue about all that stuff and more but what we all agree on; bench mark stain and otherwise is how effortless white makes your bedroom look. Even a corner once cursed by one of our very own. Particularly that one because now that she loves her table as much as the rest of us did she refuses to pick up anything that comes within a foot of it.
