There was one white desk that survived four years in this office without ever once looking like it’d been here that long. You end up with half the team arguing that white desks are the best because anyone who comes into a room with one white object in it assumes you’re an actual person who curated their space as opposed to one who things have just accumulated around. The other half thinks white is the problem – everything shows up on white, white is the very embodiment of a messy desk’s crunchy cardboard warning that this space does not clean itself, thank you very much desk – and they jealously guard desk two from the world as exhibit A.

In reality, we’ve discovered, what tends to cause a desk to age better or worse isn’t the colour, but the finish. This should be niche desktop carpentry knowledge but hear us out. If it’s properly sealed top, it brushes things off. If it’s not, it seeps into every stain like it’s trying to remember it later. You know how white desks make you track your laptop placement and think about where your arms are positioned at all times? They make you analyse all the stuff you think you’re just going to shove on top of them and forget about. Not the laptop and the one healthy plant situation. The tangle of three different chargicers that got caught up like cats boxing each other. The mug you’ve had so long it also qualifies as furniture. The pile of post that you move from corner to corner without ever actually dealing with, because do you know what’s on the other side?

On a white desk, it all just looks guilty.

Hostile, even.

Like your desk is somehow auditing you. Slap that same stuff on a dark wood desk and suddenly it’s homely.

And yet we keep buying white desks. So I think we all know what the real reason is. Maybe it is the fresh start concept. Maybe it’s literally just that nothing says ‘big, bright office’ like a really clean white desk can, every other colour we’ve tried makes the room feel smaller and busier. Until someone sets down their coffee cup without a coaster, and then you’re actually cleaning the desk every day.

The moral of our story: buy the desk built like desk one, not desk two. And then don’t ever leave anything on it without first repenting of your sins aloud. We can’t agree on most things here, but we can agree on that.
