It took me three and a half years and a friendship break-up to learn that white end tables lie.
There is a white end table that lived in this flat for four years and never once looked dirty. There is another white end table, purchased later and by someone who clearly hadn’t learnt from this, that had a tea ring visible within a fortnight of buying it. Those two white end tables have basically been the basis of an entire argument my friendship team has been having ever since, without either side fully relinquishing their ground.
The one I bought was gloss laminate top, ultra cheap, the sort of white that glows slightly blue under some lightings. It sat next to our sofa through two flatshares and a breakup and came out the other side unscathed, looking exactly the same way it did when we bought it, which nobody trusted at the time. The one they bought was nicer, more expensive, proper painted timber. And it got a permanent ring from one mug of tea left out overnight.
One mug.
One night.
And it never came out. Half of us took that as evidence that the laminated one we’d had secretly would have been the smarter purchase, had it suddenly started staining. The other half maintain that the painted one was just badly finished and we shouldn’t be disparaging of all white end tables on the basis of one dodgy pot of paint.

Here’s the thing nobody tells you about white furniture though.
Photographs of it make it look like a decision you’ve made about every aspect of your life and personality, but IRL it acts like a toddlers’ white school shirt and will show you every single marker, mug ring and crushed banana you’ve ever had the misfortune to encounter.
White end tables specifically suffer from this more than most because they’re heighted perfectly to catch said glass rings, remote control scuffs and dog noses if you have the sort of dog that thinks examining your furniture forensically is a good idea.
But.
White end tables do have their uses. There’s nothing quite so neat as a white end table quietly doing its job next to a dark sofa, it breaks up the corner of the room and stops it looking like it’s refused to join the party. I have sat on the side of this friendship team that has genuinely rearranged a living room so the table sat in the best light from the window and that’s either designer gold or someone who has too much time on their hands, your call.
Mostly what we’ve landed on is that you buy it for how it looks in the vision of your room you have in your head, not how you’ll accidentally treat it while living your life with children and overexcited guests red wine. You accept the trade off. Laminate top with a sealed finish that the cats can’t scratch off survives practically anything and, crucially, will look like it, joyfully, for years to come. Painted or open grain finish will photograph like a dream and look like swearing by March. We’ve bought both. We’d still pick the ugly reliable one next time and throw together some colour co-ordinating cushions to hide the evidence, mostly because none of us want to have to explain ourselves over a tea ring to yet another dinner party through week three of lockdown, honestly.
